Experience our unique dance program!

Through a variety of classes geared to meet the needs of all ages from 4 years old to adult, this program teaches the basic skills of dance and challenges the dancers to work together to create rhythms and learn set dances unique to Irish Dance. A form of dance that requires working together as a group, our classes offer an education beyond learning to move to the music. Heather Gallagher, owner and Artistic Director of the Asheville Performing Arts Academy, grew up taking Irish Dance classes at a local place in her hometown of Euclid, Ohio. When she came to Asheville, she wanted to offer this extraordinary opportunity to the Asheville community and help children succeed and learn important life lessons that she learned from her experience in Irish Dance.

Adult Modern Dance: Beg- Adv

What is modern dance? “Modern dance is a more relaxed, free style of dance in which choreographers use emotions and moods to design their own steps, in contrast to ballet’s structured code of steps. It has a deliberate use of gravity, whereas ballet is rigid in its technique. Because of the common history, the two forms (classical ballet and modern) share a similar terminology and structure. Modern dance is a term that applies to a variety of different disciplines, all with subtly different techniques, that responded to the imperialism of ballet through varying, culturally specific catalytic factors.” (Wikipedia.org)

This is a “release technique” based modern dance class, with random and quirky surprises.  Class begins with a warm-up series on the floor, focused on releasing muscular tension to allow more freedom and mobility in the body.  Incorporated into class are traditional and technical dance steps, gestural phrases, improvisation, high traveling combinations and even Dance Theater. Body and placement awareness is highly stressed throughout class, as well as focusing on moving from our bones and joints, rather than solely relying on our muscles.  Overall, students learn to dance smartly and correctly, plus have a grand old time doing it!
